Selection Rules

Below are the types of selection rules you can set for Windows, Linux, and Mac computers for when you are backing up individual disks and/or volumes. You can further refine selection rules by setting file filters.

For Windows

[All volumes] Selects all volumes on the computer.
Drive letter Selects the volume with the relevant drive letter.

e.g. C:\
[Fixed Volumes (Physical machines)] Selects all volumes of physical machines, except for removable media.
Fixed volumes are the following:

    • SCSI
    • ATAPI
    • ATA
    • SSA
    • SAS
    • SATA
[BOOT+SYSTEM] Selects the system and boot volumes. This is the minimally required set of data needed for an operating system recovery.
[Disk 1] Selects the first disk in the computer, which includes all volumes in the said disk.

For Linux

[All volumes] Selects all mounted volumes on the computer.
/dev/
    • /dev/hda1 – selects the first volume on the first IDE hard disk
    • /dev/sda1 – selects the first volume on the first SCSI hard disk
    • /dev/md1 – selects the first software RAID hard disk
To choose other basic volumes, specify the location. Type /dev/XdYN.

    • X – disk type
    • Y – disk number
    • N – volume number
To choose a logical volume, put the volume group name and its specific name.

e.g.
volume group name is vg_themachine
logical volumes under vg_themachine are:

    • lv_sun
    • lv_moon
If you want to back up the two logical volumes, type the following:

    /dev/vg_themachine/lv_sun
    /dev/vg_themachine/lv_moon

For OS X

[Disk 1] Selects the first disk of the machine, including all the volumes that belong on that first disk.

Note: To select another disk, type the relevant disk number.

It should be noted that you can recover individual disks, volumes, or files using a disk-level backup. Also, backing up an entire computer or machine means a backup of all that machine’s disks.
