How to Upload Files Using FTP

If you’re trying to upload files to your website using FTP but can’t seem to find the specific guide to your preferred FTP client, don’t fret because we covered all the necessary details you need in this guide. We’ll look into how to upload files using the most common FTP clients available online such as FileZilla, WS_FTP, CuteFTP, and Cyberduck.

In addition, you’ll also learn how to upload files using other methods like Notepad++, Cyberduck (Mac), SmartFTP, and more. So, let’s begin!

But before getting into the steps on how to upload files using your FTP client, we have to establish first a connection to the server. If this is your first time using the application, then configuring the settings is a must.

However, if you’ve already established a connection before, then you may skip this step and proceed to uploading files using FTP.

How to Configure FileZilla Connection

To set up your FTP connection using FileZilla, follow the steps below:

Step 1. Launch FileZilla application. Click on File at the top menu bar. Then, select the Site Manager option from the drop-down list.

Step 2. A Site Manager setup window will pop-up. At this point, you can enter your website information. There are two options:

  • New Site - Use this option to create data for your website
  • New Folder - Another option to create data for multiple websites and group them in one folder.

For this guide, we’ll use the New Site option.

Step 3. Click the Rename button, and enter your preferred name for the site directory.
Step 4. Under General tab, enter your FTP login credentials.
Step 5. Click the Connect button.

Once connected, a “successful” status will be displayed as shown in the screenshot below.

Now that the connection to your server is established, you’re now ready for the next step which is uploading files using FileZilla.

How to Configure WS_FTP Connection

To set up your FTP connection using WS_FTP, follow the steps below:

Step 1. Launch WS_FTP client and enter your Site Name. Then, click the Next button.

Step 2. Choose FTP from the drop-down list as the Connection Type. Then, click the Next button.

Step 3. In the Server Address box, enter your domain name and click Next.

Step 4. Enter your FTP username and password information and click the Next button.

Step 5. Select the Connect to this site option and click the Finish button.

Once this initial setup is established, click Connect to reconnect to your FTP and select your site name from the drop-down list.

How to Configure CuteFTP Connection

To set up your FTP connection using CuteFTP, follow the steps below:

Step 1. Launch CuteFTP application.
Step 2. In the Host Address box, enter your domain name and your site name as a label for this connection.

Step 3. Enter your FTP username and password, select Normal for the login type. Then, click the Next button.

Step 4. Locate the folder you want the files you want to transfer from to your FTP server, and click Next.

Step 5. Click the Finish button to connect to your FTP server.

How to Configure Cyberduck Connection

To set up your FTP connection using Cyberduck, follow the steps below:

Step 1. Launch Cyberduck application.
Step 2. Click the Open Connection button at the top-left corner of the window and enter your FTP login credentials.

How to Upload using FTP

1. How to Upload Files using FileZilla

Using FTP clients such as FileZilla is a convenient way to upload files so you don’t have to log in to your hosting manager every time. This also works well if you’re working with a team where multiple users need to connect and add files to your website simultaneously.

Follow the steps below to upload files using FileZilla.

Step 1. Connect your FTP server using FileZilla.
Step 2. On the left-side panel of the screen, locate the file in your local directory.

Step 3. Right click on the file(s) and choose Upload or simply drag it to the right-side panel, where your website files are located.

Once successful, you should see the file added to your remote site files on the right-side panel as shown in the screenshot above.

2. How to Upload using WS_FTP

To upload files using WS FTP client, please follow the steps below. Make sure you have downloaded and installed WS_FTP client on your computer first, if not please download WS_FTP’s latest version on this link.

Now that the connection is established, you can start uploading files using WS_FTP. Here’s how:

Step 1. Connect to your FTP server using WS_FTP.
Step 2. Locate the file you want to upload from your directory on the right-side panel of the window.

3. How to Upload Files using CuteFTP

Follow the steps below to start uploading files using CuteFTP:

Step 1. Connect your FTP with CuteFTP.
Step 2. To upload or download files you have these following options:

  • Transfer Arrows. Select a file to transfer and click the upload arrow button.

  • Drag and Drop. Click on a file, then drag and drop it to where you want to transfer it. Select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl key while selecting.
  • Copy and Paste. Right-click on a file to Copy. Then, right-click where you want to transfer the file and select Paste.

4. How to Upload Files using Cyberduck

Follow the steps below to upload files using Cyberduck:

Step 1. Connect your FTP server using Cyberduck.
Step 2. Click the Upload button.
