What is a Linux VPS?

Virtual Private Servers (VPS) are the most advanced type of server virtualization technology. They are used to partition a single physical server into isolated virtual private servers. Each virtual private server looks and behaves exactly like a real networked server system, complete with its own set of init scripts, users, processes, and file systems.

In contrast to hosting, it allows multiple applications to be isolated from one another within the same container, which is dedicated to one customer. This container (VPS) shares physical resources (infrastructure) with other containers, but has its own resources dedicated to it.

Linux Virtual Server is a free and open-source project started by Wensong Zhang in May 1998, subject to the requirements of the GNU General Public License (GPL), version 2. The mission of the project is to build a high-performance and highly available server for Linux using clustering technology, which provides good scalability, reliability and serviceability.
